Specialised Travel Insurance for Specific Types of Holiday

There are several types of specialised travel insurances, which cater for specific types of holiday or trip. Most insurers offer: Business Travel Insurance, Cruise Travel Insurance and Student / Backpacker Insurance.

Business Travel Insurance
This type of travel insurance is designed to protect you when you must travel for business, as part of your job. Although you may be covered by your employer, your personal possessions, or any injuries which happen when you are not 'at work' are often uninsured. Additional cover provided by business travel insurance usually includes: work equipment; the cost of replacing you with a colleague if you are unable to attend a meeting due to illness or hospitalisation; any business cash; hire of replacement equipment, and increased personal accident cover.

Cruise Travel Insurance
This is often sold as part of a cruise holiday. The cover provided by this insurance is very similar to a standard travel insurance policy, but takes into account the possibility that you will be travelling to several different countries within the trip. Specialised cruise insurance ensures that your insurer can tailor your policy to your needs and offer you an appropriate premium based on factors such as length of trip, countries visited and expected activities. Additional cover provided may include services such as a twenty-four hour emergency medical helpline wherever you are in the world.

Student / Backpacker Insurance
This type of insurance is designed to cover the needs of young travellers who are likely to be away for long periods of time but do not require the full, standard amount of cover. If you are a student or a backpacker, you tend not to travel with large quantities of personal belongings, and those that you do carry with you may not be high-value. As such, the potential amount that you would claim on your travel insurance is lower; in return, your premium is likely to be lower than that of a standard policy. You will usually find that the items which are insured are those covered by a standard policy, but the maximum amount that you can claim will usually be lower. In some cases, insurers will only insure you under this type of policy if you are under a certain age, such as thirty-five years old. If you think that you will work abroad during your trip, ask your insurer whether or not they can cover you for working overseas: this cover is often optional if you purchase student/backpacker travel insurance.
