European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are travelling within the European Union (EU) or Switzerland, it is recommended that you apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You can do so at most Post Office® branches, online, or by telephone: (+44) 0845 606 2030. This card is free for UK residents and entitles you to discounted or free medical care when travelling within the EU.
The EHIC entitles you to some state-provided treatment, which may include treatment of chronic conditions not covered by a travel insurance policy. However, you will often have to pay for certain medical expenses which you would not have had to pay for at home. You should therefore ensure you have the EHIC and travel insurance before you leave. Some insurers will refuse to insure you if you do not have the EHIC. Remember however that travel insurance covers much more than your medical expenses (see Travel Insurance Cover).
