Student Possession Cover
Many home insurance policies will also cover a student's possessions when he or she is away at university or college. For any possessions taken with you to university or college, your contents insurance will typically provide cover equal to approximately fifteen percent of the total sum insured.
This means that if the sum insured for your contents insurance is seventy-five thousand pounds, your possessions may be protected to a value of eleven thousand, two hundred and fifty pounds whilst you are studying at university, college or boarding school. Some insurers will provide a fixed amount of cover, such as five thousand pounds, for student possessions and some will not cover student possessions at all.
Ensure that you check the terms and conditions of your policy: in some cases you may have to pay an additional premium if you require contents cover away from home. If you wish to qualify for this additional cover you will need to inform your insurance company if you temporarily move possessions from your property to a university, college, or boarding school residence.
Alternatively, many insurers offer specialised student possession insurance. This may provide a more comprehensive level of protection, since it is tailored to meet students' needs and factor in typical student risk factors. For example, you may be protected if you take your notebook away from your university accommodation to study in the library. Most insurers provide several different levels of cover to choose from: the higher the level of cover, the higher the premium you must pay.
