The National Health Service / NHS
The National Health Service, or NHS, provides free medical treatment to all UK residents. Set up in 1948 with the aim of providing care to all, regardless of their financial situation, the NHS is now the largest publicly-funded health service in the world. The NHS is organised differently in each of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Once you have registered as a UK citizen you can begin receiving medical care; the NHS offers a range of services to deal with everything from routine check-ups to heart surgery.
