Motor Insurance Certificate
Your Certificate of Motor Insurance is an accompanying document to your policy booklet and schedule that proves that you have at least the minimum insurance required by law. It is typically a one page sheet that summarises the level of cover you are receiving and your personal details.
In the event of an accident, or if a police officer requests it, or if you renew your road tax, you must produce this document. If you have an accident and you do not have your certificate with you at the time, you must give details of the police station to which you will bring the certificate within five days to demonstrate that you are adequately insured.
If you cannot produce a certificate nor take it to a police station, you are committing two separate offences. The first is that you could not produce your Certificate of Motor Insurance. The fact that you could not prove that you are insured is a separate, and second offence.
If you drive abroad you must have your Certificate of Motor Insurance with you. If you are ask for it and do not have it, some countries reserve the right to impound your vehicle.
