Use of a Mobile Phone
Since 2003 there has been a ban on using hand-held mobile phones while driving. The penalty if you are caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving was increased in 2007; the previous instant fixed fine of £30 is now £60. Additionally, three penalty points are endorsed on your driving licence.
The penalty does not apply where you use an approved hands-free kit. However, if you are using that improperly and are therefore not in control of your vehicle, the penalty still applies. It is also an offence if you cause or allow somebody to use a hand-held mobile phone while they are driving.
Any amount of penalty points and/or convictions recorded on your driving licence will increase your car insurance premium. For further information about the effects of your driving history on the cost of car insurance see Driving History.
