Personal Belongings

In the event of a car accident you may be carrying personal belongings in or on the car. These include any item which is not permanently fitted to, nor for use within your car. Your comprehensive car insurance policy will cover most items, but will usually exclude loss of or damage to the following:

  • cash, credit or debit cards, stamps, tickets, vouchers, documents
  • goods or samples carried for trade or business

Your insurer will usually give personal belongings only a small amount of cover: £150 is typical. Insurers reserve the right to reduce the pay-out by taking wear, tear and depreciation of your belongings into account. This means that you will not necessarily receive a replacement of an item, rather a cash sum equal to the value of the item at the time of the accident.
