Medical Costs

Your insurer will consider covering medical expenses that you, or any other person in your car, incur as a direct result of injuries caused in an accident. The medical expenses of anybody else involved in the accident (third parties) are already covered under third party liability.

Usually this cover is limited to emergency treatment, as determined by the Road Traffic Act 1988, and is typically of just £100 per person, although your insurance may differ. Some insurers will allow you to claim for emergency treatment without it affecting your no claims discount.

Some insurance policies will include additional medical cover in return for an increased premium. This extra cover can include:

  • Physiotherapy treatment
  • Driver counselling – if you are involved in an accident (even if it was not your fault), you may be offered counselling to help you regain your confidence and get back on the road.

Exclusions to medical treatment cover will typically include cases where illness is directly related to alcohol or drug abuse.
