Injury to You or Your Partner
Fully comprehensive policies may provide additional cover for you and your partner if you are injured in an accident. Some insurers only offer this cover if you take out their additional Personal Accident Benefit, which gives the same level of protection.
If you are covered by your policy (and you should ask your insurer, or refer to your policy documentation, if you are unsure) you are likely to receive a fixed-sum pay-out if, within three months of the accident, the injury is the direct and only cause of you or your partner's:
- death
- permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes
- loss of a limb
There are usually particular terms and conditions to consider. You will rarely be entitled to receive several large payouts, if these exceed a certain amount, within the policy term. For example, if you have received £5,000 as a result of loss of a limb, you may only be entitled to a further £2,500 if you lose your sight in another accident within twelve months, as opposed to the original entitlement to £5,000.
You will also not receive a pay-out if you have another policy that covers your injuries, nor if the injury or death was caused by attempted suicide or suicide.
