Green Card
In the past, you were required to carry an additional Green Card if you wished to travel outside of the UK, under car insurance purchased in the UK. The Green Card itself was not insurance, but provided a standard certificate that recognised your UK insurance EU-wide. Now the system has changed. While driving in the following countries you no longer need to carry a Green Card with you, as your existing insurance certificate is recognised:
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
However, you require a Green Card if you wish to travel in some countries, especially those outside the EU:
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Israel, Islamic Republic of Iran, Moldova, Morocco, Serbia and Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine.
The Green Card must be requested sufficiently in advance, to ensure that you receive it before you travel. Although you may not legally be required to carry a Green Card with you in EU countries, it still is the insurance document most easily recognised and accepted by international police forces.
