Driving History
The driving history of any drivers insured on your car insurance policy has a big effect on your premiums. If you are convicted of a driving offence, it is listed in your driving record. Not only may you have to pay a fine, but you could earn penalty points or be disqualified from driving altogether.
A fine is not the only financial penalty you will incur as a result of a driving offence; your car insurer will penalise you too. If you earn even a few penalty points as a result of a driving offence, they will be quick to reclassify you as high-risk and increase your premium.
Your insurer has every right to invalidate your policy at any time, if they discover that you were untruthful or failed to disclose any driving convictions. In the event of a claim, they may also contact your previous insurer to verify the information you have given them.
There are certain approved rehabilitation courses available if you are convicted of a certain offence, such as a drink-driving or speeding conviction. Refer to the article Drink Driving for more information. There are a handful of insurers that recognise these courses, and may offer a discount if you complete them.
