Rejected Claims
Even if you have taken out a valid insurance policy, your claim may be rejected or your pay-out reduced if your insurance company has legitimate grounds.
Legitimate grounds could include:
- If you were largely to blame for any theft of, or from, your vehicle.
- If you are covered for the claim under another policy; for example if the contents of your vehicle are covered under your home insurance.
- If you gave inaccurate or untruthful information, or failed to disclose any information that would have altered the terms of your policy or the claim itself.
- If you do not have receipts to prove a part of your claim; for example, the theft of an expensive navigation system from your car may not be covered unless you can prove your purchase of it.
Insurers require that you act with 'utmost faith'. This means that you need to disclose any information the insurer may deem important, whether or not they specifically request it. For instance, if you are convicted of a driving offence you should inform them as soon as possible. Being truthful may increase the initial cost of your policy, but it will avoid rejected claims and expensive bills in the future.
