Purchasing Sports Insurance
Mainstream insurance companies are all too aware that every sporting activity involves some risk of physical injury, and as a result many refuse to offer cover for sports. If you are interested in buying sports insurance you may need to compare policies from specialist insurers, especially if you participate in extreme or dangerous sports, such as snowboarding or boxing.
Basic sports insurance policies can be found for as little as five pounds per month; thereafter insurance premiums rise in line with the comprehensiveness of the package. This means that you will pay a higher price for more cover, a larger payout when claiming, a more personal service and any other extras, than you would for the most basic level of cover.
Many sports insurance applications can be made over the internet, or by telephone. Some insurers will require confirmation from a doctor that you have undergone a full medical examination prior to taking out the insurance, and some policies also exclude pre-existing medical conditions such as osteoporosis and HIV. If you suffer from serious conditions like these you may find it difficult, or very expensive, to get insured.
If you need to cancel your sports insurance policy the process is very simple. You will need to contact your insurance provider and let them know that you wish to cancel or change your policy. The insurer will either cancel your policy immediately, or send you the relevant cancellation forms. The cancellation process can usually be completed within one working week. Some companies will charge you an administration fee for cancellation: it is worth checking the policy's terms and conditions on charges before you sign any documents. If you cancel your policy within one month of its purchase, you will usually be entitled to a full refund of any premiums that you have paid up to this point as long as you have not made a claim. The longer you have had your policy however, the less likely you will be to receive a refund.
