Purchasing Body Part Insurance
Although the cover offered by a body part insurance policy varies between insurers, body parts can typically be insured for any value. There is not usually a set cover value for individual limbs, because premiums are calculated on an individual basis in order to take the policy holder's career and lifestyle into account, the risks to which their body part is exposed, and the extent to which damage to their body part would affect their income.
Specialist insurers may offer policies for stunt professionals, subject to a thorough medical examination and, in all probability, very high premiums. A more common variation on body part insurance is sports insurance which covers you against injuries which lead to extensive periods of inability to work or compete whilst gaining treatment, therefore representing a significant loss of income as well as potential medical costs.
Occasionally, counselling will also be included in body part insurance policies to help the injured person cope with emotional trauma resulting from their injury. You can claim on your body part insurance if you have suffered a permanent or temporary disability, or in some cases scarring or disfigurement to the limb for which you are insured, if this will have a negative effect on your ability to work.
Body part insurance is still relatively rare, and is therefore usually offered by specialist insurers. If you need to make a claim on your insurance, it is important to contact your insurer as soon as possible. Remember however, that the conditions of claiming on this insurance are often very strict, and some people find that the potential payout from the insurance is not generous, considering that these policies are usually very expensive.
If you cancel your body part insurance, you will not be guaranteed a refund of any premiums you have paid, and will almost always have to pay a cancellation fee.
