Maintenance / Support Grants
Maintenance and special support grants are available for full-time UK students who have particular difficulties financing their time at university. The main factor in determining whether you will qualify for a grant is your household income, as this table demonstrates:
£25,000 or less household income | Full grant - £2,835 |
£30,000 | £2,000 |
£35,000 | £1,260 |
£40,000 | £1000 |
£50,000 | £525 |
£60,000 | £50 |
More than £60,000 | No grant |
The above chart applies only to students who are starting their university or college course in the 2008/2009 academic year.
As with bursaries and scholarships, you will not have to pay back a maintenance or special support grant. This funding is also available from the Student Loans Company (SLC), but you must fill in the relevant application forms, which differ from those for an income assessed maintenance loan. The Student Loans Company will be able to advise you.
If you have previously received Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) payments during your education, you will no longer receive these EMA payments; instead you are likely to be eligible for a non-repayable maintenance grant instead.
