Card Limits
There are certain limits that apply to debit cards. If you use a Solo or Visa Electron card, you will not be able to make a transaction that would exceed your current account balance, except in special circumstances (see Overdraft). If your debit card is a Maestro or Visa Debit card, transactions that would exceed your current account balance may be authorised at the discretion of your bank or building society. If you have an arranged overdraft on your current account, transactions will be authorised up until the overdraft limit. Once you have used the overdraft limit, your bank or building society may then offer you an unarranged overdraft. There are fees and interest charges for this type of overdraft and it is at the bank's discretion whether or not it is offered to you.
In order to protect your current account funds if your card were lost or stolen, there is a daily cash withdrawal limit. This is typically between two hundred and three hundred pounds. If you require more money on any one day, you must request this from your bank or building society in-branch, where they should be able to issue cash in a greater amount, providing you have the correct identification such as a passport or driving licence.
